David and Jesus
2 minute read

In David and Goliath, we saw that David was not a frightened little boy overcoming a bully. Instead God used David’s faith and skills as a shepherd to conquer Goliath. As we delved deeper into the story we also learnt that David was a forerunner to the Messiah.
If you haven’t already, take some time to read 1 Samuel 17 and then reflect on just some of the parallels between David and Jesus:
- David protects his sheep just as Jesus, our Good Shepherd does (John 10:11)
- Bethlehem is both David’s hometown and Jesus’ birth place (1 Sam. 17:12; Matt. 2:1)
- David is the root of Jesse (Isaiah 11:10), whose descendants will be on the throne forever (2 Sam 7:12-13). Jesus is the root and descendant of David (Rev 22:16)
- God removed the kingship from tribe of Benjamin (1 Sam. 9:16-17), to the prophesied royal line of the tribe of Judah (Gen 49:10) – Jesus is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah (Rev 5:5)
- In the future Jesus will rule as King, but David will be a Prince over Israel (Ezekiel 34:24)
- While David fought in the name of God, Jesus is God and has defeated Satan

Did you know that Ruth and Boaz were David’s great-grandparents (Ruth 4:18-22)? All throughout the Scriptures we not only see the promise of Jesus, but how God works through different people within the Bible to make these promises come to pass!
