The Myth of Generational Curses
2 minute read
Do the sins of our ancestors really impact us for the rest of our lives?
Have you heard of the term ‘generational curses’? It’s a term often used to guilt someone into believing that the sins and evil practices of an ancestor still impact us today – even suggesting we are still under a curse.
While some may indeed have distant family connections with evil practices, such an association DOES NOT place a curse on a saved person. For example, one of my grandparents was heavily into astrology. It was a big deal when I was growing up. I still see the effect it has on unsaved family with all manner of superstitions guiding their thinking. BUT I am saved and I know that I am free from any such legacy over my life.
Sadly, some ‘ministries’ would still try to convince me that any unfortunate circumstances in my life are directly linked to that grandparent. People who then fall into believing these lies are often pushed into deliverance ministry (a problematic practice of casting out demons, when often there aren’t any demons to begin with). It’s a ploy of fear and shame, which ultimately makes a mockery of a persons salvation in Christ. The truth is, if you are saved (i.e. you have sought forgiveness and repentance of your sins; believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection, and acknowledge Him as Lord), then your life belongs to Christ and no demon can possess you.
Scriptures to help you re-align with God’s Word
If you have been shamed or guilted into believing you are cursed, then I would encourage to seek out a Biblically sound church to help get you back on the right path. Most importantly, open your Bible and study the Scriptures to equip yourself to be able discern error when you hear it. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the wisdom and courage you need to seek the truth.
Ezekiel 18:20
The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself
Romans 8:1
Therefore there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus
